What Works
Recognition of FASD-type behaviours should signal the need to interact with the accused, witness or victim differently than a person who does not show signs of FASD. Brain damage prevents accurate processing of data, from the point of receiving the data to acting on it. Adapting the law office and court room to decrease distractions and stimuli improves the chances for more reliable communication.
Court orders for assessment and professional assistance for the FASD affected person prior to or in place of incarceration may keep the person from re-offending once support systems are in place.
